Detailed report on the International Conference, Workshop and Summer School in India
A delegation of nearly 30 academics, researchers, postgraduate students, and final-year undergraduates from Sri Lanka returned last week from Coimbatore, India, after participating in the Fourth International Conference on Advanced Materials for Clean Energy and Health Applications (AMCEHA 2026), held at the Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT).
As the principal collaborating partners of the conference, academics from the University of Jaffna made significant intellectual contributions to the main organisers, the Coimbatore Institute of Technology, India, and the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norway, through abstract review, coordination of technical sessions, and active involvement in conference organisation.
A distinguished conclave was also held with the participation of industry representatives, five Vice-Chancellors, including those of the University of Jaffna and the University of Vavuniya, eleven directors and chairpersons of R&D institutions, notably the Chairman of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Sri Lanka, the Director of the National Fundamental Studies Centre, Sri Lanka, the Director General of CSIR, India, and several eminent scientists.
The conference provided an outstanding platform for research networking and knowledge exchange, bringing together researchers from more than 60 institutions and featuring over 250 research presentations. Participants represented India, Sri Lanka, Norway, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and the United States of America.
One of the highlights of the conference was the successful organisation of the Innovator Session: Presentation of Novel Ideas and Working Prototypes, which showcased innovative research outcomes and emerging technologies with significant societal and industrial relevance. The Innovative Project Showcase, a distinctive feature of AMCEHA 2026, brought together young innovators, research scholars, and startups to present cutting-edge ideas, prototypes, and technological solutions addressing global challenges in energy, materials, and healthcare. Out of 17 prototypes presented, five were selected by a panel of judges. Top honours were awarded to teams from IIT Madras, Anna University, University of Madras, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, and Amrita University.
The conference created valuable opportunities for strengthening academic and research collaborations among universities, research institutions, and industry partners across national boundaries. Several new collaborative initiatives and joint research ventures were also discussed among participating institutions.
Speaking on behalf of the Sri Lankan delegation and in his capacity as Team Lead and one of the Conference Chairs, Prof. P. Ravirajan expressed his sincere appreciation to the CIT administration, conference chairs, and collaborators, particularly Prof. Dhayalan (Western Norway University of Applied Sciences) and Prof. Muthukumarasamy (Coimbatore Institute of Technology), together with their dedicated teams, for their outstanding efforts in ensuring the success of the event.
He also paid special tribute to the convenors and young researchers, Prof. Balraju (CIT), Prof. Thanihaichelvan (University of Jaffna), Prof. Jeyanthinath (KMU), and Prof. Azarudeen (CIT), for their warm hospitality, excellent organisation, and meticulous logistical arrangements, which made the visit both productive and memorable.
Prof. Ravirajan further noted that AMCEHA is steadily evolving into a recognised international brand for high-quality academic conferences, supported by exemplary organisation and hospitality. The success of AMCEHA 2026 reflects the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of the entire organising team. This conference series is significantly enhancing the international standing of the collaborating partners, including the University of Jaffna, by attracting eminent researchers from over 60 reputed institutions such as IIT Madras, Anna University, the National University of South Korea, the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, the University of Bergen, the University of Keele, and the University of Southampton, among others in the United Kingdom, the United States, Norway, South Korea, India, and beyond. Selected papers from the conference will be published in more than five high-impact journals.
HRNCET project coordinators, Prof. Dhayalan Velauthapillai and Prof. Punniamoorthy Ravirajan, announced that the Fifth International Conference on Advanced Materials for Clean Energy and Health Applications (AMCEHA 2027) will be hosted in Jaffna and Kandy. The upcoming conference is expected to strengthen further the growing international research partnerships established through the AMCEHA series and provide an expanded platform for global collaboration in advanced materials research.
